About Melanie Phung
Melanie Phung is a Washington DC SEO and online marketing professional with expertise in site optimization, content development and information architecture. In late April 2010, she joined PBS as Director, New Media, where she is responsible for SEO and content strategy.
She got her start in the search engine optimization industry when she was in charge of SEO for a publicly traded e-commerce company, where her main focus was the company’s flagship shopping site Wirefly.com. Wirefly is the largest online retailer of cell phones from all major U.S. cell phone carriers and one of HitWise’s Top 5 Electronics Shopping Sites on the Web. Under her direction, the company’s websites gained top 3 rankings for many of the vertical’s most competitive keyword terms, resulting in millions of dollars in incremental revenue from organic search.
Melanie also has experience in online reputation management and social media marketing. In 2009 and early 2010, while working for a small digital marketing agency, Melanie managed the day-to-day social media presence and overall social media strategy for the international aid organization CARE. During the humanitarian crisis following Haiti’s earthquake, CARE’s use of Twitter and Facebook was widely applauded as a great example of using social media to communicate about disaster relief.
Prior to her SEO work, Melanie managed email newsletters for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, helping the organization launch and expand dozens of branded electronic publications, and also ran the publications program of the Telecommunications Industry Association, where she helped the telecom trade organization move all of its publications online.
Recent speaking engagements have included CONFAB 2012, Digital East 2012, Internet Summit Raleigh, and Dallas Digital Summit.
In her free time, Melanie enjoys taking photos of Washington DC, obsessing over Flickr’s Interestingness algorithm, and fussing over her parrots, and sharing thoughts/resources 140 characters at a time.
Her goals for the near future include learning how to write a decent bio page. You can reach Melanie via the contact form here or by leaving a comment on the blog.
